Basidiomycota contains the most morphologically, physiologically and biochemichally complex and evolutionarily derived members of the Kingdom Fungi, comprising some of the most popularly known fungal species, such as the gilled mushrooms and bracket fungi. They inhabit a wide range of ecological niches, performing vital ecosystem roles, particularly in global carbon cycling and as symbiotic partners with a wide range of other organisms, such as plants, animals, algae and other fungi. Specifically in the context of economical importance, the basidiomycetes are a highly valuable food source (edible mushroms), nutriceuticals and bioinnoculants, produce some industrially important enzymes and pigments, and are increasingly medicinally important
