An Italian explorer responsible for the European discovery of America in 1492. Columbus wanted to sail across the ocean to find Asia and all the riches they had. Columbus never reached Asia because he sailed west across the Atlantic instead of sailing south around Africa and then east. Although Columbus did not ever reach Asia he landed on a small island in the Caribbean. Columbus named that island San Salvador.

The Europeans thought of him as a hero, some even describing him as god-like. Columbus’s main focus was money; he did anything he could to profit off of the New World. In order to take the most advantage of the newfoundland Columbus took slaves, farmed the land to depletion, exhausted natural resources and colonized the land.
Christopher Columbus is well known as the person who discovered the Americas. We even have a holiday called “Columbus Day” to honor him. However he does not deserve this credit due to the way he treated the Native Americans, the legacy he left behind and the fact that he didn’t discover anything.
