The statement Coach Brooks makes about talents being used as a system for the betterment of the team is a direct response to the Board of Directors harping on the individual talents of certain players. Brooks recognizes that each player has immense individual talents and capabilities, but those talents mean nothing if the team fails to use them effectively. This is true for my experience, as I was becoming acquainted with strangers while simultaneously coming to terms with my new living arrangements and routine. As we entered the storming phase emotions increased and interpersonal conflicts came to light. Between interpreting the manuals differently and trying to create normalized patterns, we have slowly entered into the norming phase. I believe it will take more time to fully enter the norming phase as we are still developing a rapport with each other and learning boundaries and gaining confidence. The previously mentioned principles will relate to my time as a junior officer because there will be countless occasions where I will need to rely on those around me. When I enter my first unit, it will not matter where I graduated from or what I accomplished as a civilian; What will matter is my ability to effectively lead a team of people who collectively have more experience and knowledge than I do. I realize I cannot rely on just myself to get the required job done and I will go through my own “forming, storming, norming, performing” phases.
