Thuy Nguyen Professor Coronado EWRT 2 10 June 2024 Educating for Integrity: Why CRT Belongs in Schools In an era where social justice is at the major front of public media, an important question surfaces: how can we effectively teach the next generation to confront these recurring circumstances? Critical Race Theory (CRT) is an academic concept that dives deep into the ways in which race and racism intersect with politics, culture, and the law. It questions commonly held beliefs and looks at the roots of racial inequality. This exhibits how CRT provides students with a deeper understanding of systemic racism. Director Jalaya Liles Dunn presenting the need for an inclusive as well as anti-racist model: "Culturally relevant, anti-racist instruction model is needed. We need a classroom set up, so not just instruction, but we also need a space that lets children know, you are welcome here. An inclusive education is a space where we all are at the table together. We all hear everyone's story" (Dunn, PBS NewsHour, 4:29). Showing that there is a need for creating an educational environment that values diverse perspectives. The broadcast also mentions that opponents of CRT are using it as a “catch-all phrase” (PBS NewsHour 4:53) to go against efforts for inclusion in education. This reveals a potential weakness (Tactical Flaw) in their argument: they are not addressing the specific goals of CRT, but instead are broadly categorizing it to promote opposition. By putting it this way, they attempt to gain sympathy from those that are unsure about changes in the education system, or those who feel that their values are being
