In the second quarter, we read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and I selected Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling as my banned book. Fahrenheit 451 relates to censorship because it is about a man whose job is to burn books because all books in that society must be destroyed. Also, coincidentally, Fahrenheit 451 itself is considered a banned or challenged book. Have anyone ever thought about firemen starting fires instead of preventing them? Well in Fahrenheit 451 firemen would burn books and even sometimes burn houses down. Firemen and trucks were futuristic and different. Clarisse was not scared of having books she was curious about them but most people were scared of books. Montag was one of the few people who wanted to have books.
In Montag’s society, they believe that books should be destroyed. In the society that Montag lives in, they turned the firemen into full time book burners. It even says in the text,”with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world. ”(Bradbury pg.3) What the text is saying, is that instead of the hose spraying water it is like a python spraying its deadly venom, which is kerosene.

First, I was amazed by the words manipulation that the author played with. Although most of the words are very confusing, but after I get to know them, the whole book became more reasonful to me.
Throughout today’s culture, there are many occurrences that are similar to those demonstrated F451. In a letter written by Kurt Vonnegut to the board of a high school in North Dakota, he talks about his book and some other books being burned since they contained “obscene language”. In fahrenheit 451, the possession of any book is against the law. So the books are burned by firemen just like Kurt Vonnegut’s book was at the high school.
One of the reasons why I chose to write about book banning is because of the book Fahrenheit 451. It has always been one of my favorites and the concept of not being able to gain knowledge from reading amazes me. Something that I have easy access to was completely denied to everyone in that society. I believe that there are arguable reasons as to why books should be banned and why they shouldn't, which is why I wanted to do further research on this topic.
The novel, Fahrenheit 451, presents a future society where books are prohibited and the firemen burn any that are. The title is the temperature at which books burn. It was written by Ray Bradbury and first published in October 1953. In this novel, protagonist Montag changes his understanding in various aspects such as love or his human relationship throughout the book. However, among all of these, fire – the main theme of this novel – has the most significance as it also changes his understanding of knowledge from books.
Fahrenheit 451 has an astonishingly accurate future depiction of a society in which everyone is too distracted by technology, so they ignore most of the world around them. The community members are not aware of nature or other human beings, and they never take time to actually think deeply about life and ideas in general. Many high school and middle school teach this book in curriculums nationwide, because the addiction to technology and hatred of books portrayed in the book is beginning to be prevalent in our society. This book also glorifies individuality by admiring a girl who is different from everyone else. In the past, many parents have decided to challenge this book due to the violence, the religious discrimination, the foul language, and the references to drinking and smoking.
Banned Book Essay Since as early as the 20th century, banning books has slowly increased. According to an article on Gale, books that feature people of color or feature a character apart from the LGBTQ+, are more likely to get banned than books that aren’t. In 2006, Montgomery County Texas banned the dystopian Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (Turnbow). Although Fahrenheit 451 has vulgar language, it shouldn’t be banned because it encourages the reader to seek knowledge through books and it promotes self-awareness. Ever since Fahrenheit 451 was released, there have been many controversies about the language and storyline of the book.
The United States of America is renowned for the endless freedoms the country offers, yet high schools are being deprived of the opportunity to include important pieces of literature in curriculum because of the controversial subjects highlighted within the books. The book, ironically, is about a fireman who runs away from society because he refuses to burn books and submit to a life without meaning.
