The novel that I read is called Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and it was written and published in 1953. The story revolves around a man by the name of Guy Montag who is a fireman in a futuristic world where instead of putting fire out, firefighters start them. Books are banned and are burnt upon discovery. Guy had never questioned what he does until his wife attempted suicide and his neighbor, Clarisse, was killed in a car crash. With all this happening he realizes that people are willing to risk their lives for the books they own and this makes him wonder what is so precious about the books.

One of the reasons why I chose to write about book banning is because of the book Fahrenheit 451. It has always been one of my favorites and the concept of not being able to gain knowledge from reading amazes me. Something that I have easy access to was completely denied to everyone in that society. I believe that there are arguable reasons as to why books should be banned and why they shouldn't, which is why I wanted to do further research on this topic.

Fahrenheit 451 has an astonishingly accurate future depiction of a society in which everyone is too distracted by technology, so they ignore most of the world around them. The community members are not aware of nature or other human beings, and they never take time to actually think deeply about life and ideas in general. Many high school and middle school teach this book in curriculums nationwide, because the addiction to technology and hatred of books portrayed in the book is beginning to be prevalent in our society. This book also glorifies individuality by admiring a girl who is different from everyone else. In the past, many parents have decided to challenge this book due to the violence, the religious discrimination, the foul language, and the references to drinking and smoking.

According to an article on Gale, books that feature people of color or feature a character apart from the LGBTQ+, are more likely to get banned than books that aren’t. In Fahrenheit 451, Beatty’s villainy characterization enhances the story by being the chief, where he represents censorship, which reveals how society is careless about the intellectual freedom of citizens The censorship in Fahrenheit 451 reveals how humanity is on its downfall because society is being limited from developing. When Montag asks Mildred about Clarrise disappearing she says, that “she’s dead,” and that she didn’t tell him sooner because she “forgot all about it” (Bradbury 48). This shows the impact of a society without intellectual freedom.
A society where books are burned and reading is banned, seems like a far off dystopian land, but it's happening in America, and it's happening now. Books such as Ray Bradbury's ""Fahrenheit 451"" are being banned daily. The book, ironically, is about a fireman who runs away from society because he refuses to burn books and submit to a life without meaning. Although "Fahrenheit 451" brings up issues pertaining to controversial beliefs, it should not be banned because of it's educational value. By reading this book students are exposed to life lessons and experiences all within the confines of a book.
