The eEpic pPoem Beowulf is written by Burton Raffel, and where Bbeowulf is the epic hero. Beowulf has to fight many monsters throughout the story. lof, wyrd and comitatus all form part and are important in understanding his culture. First of all lof, or its meaning of fame, was very important in beowulf’s culture. Fame was their whole life achievement goal. In The Final Battle lines 810 state “order my troop to construct a barrow on a headland on the coast,” also lines 813 “and be a reminder among my people - so that in coming times crews under sail will call it Beowulf’s barrow,”. Through this quote we can see how beowulf was a brave men always and fought against many monsters in order to achieve fame. He asked to have a statue made in honor of him near a place where it could easily be seen by others. In addition The Final Battle also states “It would be hard to survive”. This quote shows us how important its was to achieve fame, even risking their lives caused no them fear. While risking their lives to achieve fame it was really convenient to have a true friend around. For example looking back at The Final Battle lines 746 “from his high-born comrades; that hand - picked troop broke ranks and ran for their lives.”. While the others ran away lines 752 state “His name was Wiglaf” he was the only one to stay behind and fight along beowulf’s side. These two quotes can show how important it is to have a true friend who will stay with you in the bad and the good situations. Beowulf would have probably died without wiglaf and the dragon would have survived. In beowulf’s culture loyalty, true friendship and companionship were all very important, especially to beowulf who was always in the danger zone. In case of one's death the other would stay behind to let the world know of the others greatness and achievements in
