Is Feminism Relevant for Women’s Today? The world’s population in 2010 is estimated at nearly 7 billion people and more precisely at 6,908,688,378 which is almost three times the population estimated in 1950 that is, it has taken 60 years for the population to almost triple in size. (Jha, Prabhat, Kumar, Priya, Dhingra, Thiruchelvam & Moineddin, 2006). Besides that, there are approximately 57 million more men than women in the world in 2010. At the global level, the percentages are almost equal 50.4 per cent men and 49.6 per cent women or, using the male/female ratio, 102 males for every 100 females. The word feminism comes from late 19th century from the French word féminisme. According to the Oxford Dictionary, feminism mean the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. While, the word feminist comes from late 19th century from French word féministe and from the Latin word femina mean woman. According to the Oxford Dictionary, feminist mean a person who supports feminism. McElroy described feminism as personal liberation and equity with men and she also mention that feminism is the doctrine that states “women are and should be treated as the equal of men” (2003). On the other hand, Kramerae defined feminism as "feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings" (1996). But Robertson defined "feminism encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians" (1992). Definition of feminism and feminist varies from everyone but feminism is just the belief system that women and men are equal. Feminism believes that women deserve the same rights, respect, and chances as men. Let we move on to the main topic. So the issue of gender balance in society continues. Women have gone beyond equality. In the mid-Seventies, I was a feminist in the sense of being an equal opportunities person. I said “Give us the chance and we will show you we are as good as men, if not better” Now it’s all about “Oh dear, we have not made it after all, so now we want special favours. We want all-women shortlists. We want help breaking the glass ceiling”. The weight is now quite shamefully on the side of the woman”. Do you agree? Has “Feminism gone too far”?
