Fred Hampton was an advocate and spokesperson for numerous organizations pertaining to civil rights for African-Americans. He was assassinated during his sleep as a result of a raid on his apartment which was conducted by three different law enforcement agencies Hampton attended Triton College and was a Pre-law major after his graduation in 1966 from Proviso East High School. He took an interest in Pre-law in an effort to familiarize himself with the judicial system, to use as a defensive method against police. He joined the Black Panther Party (BPP) which were highly involved in civil right and Black Power movements around the 60’s and 70’s. Unfortunately, these special skills did not sit well with the FBI. According to The History Rat, The chief of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, saw Hampton as “a threat to stability”, and therefore he urged surveillance on him. On December 4, 1969, a raid was carried out by numerous Chicago Police officers on Hampton’s apartment. They expected to find 20 other Black Panther Party members inside but only Hampton, his girlfriend, Mark Clark (Security duty on the house) and a few others were found. The cops shot at everyone in the apartment. Hampton and Clark were killed by the gunfire. “The amount of fire power used to kill the two men was overwhelming and overpowering creating a bloodbath” (The History Rat). In the enraged controversial aftermath the raid, police claimed the shooting was justifiable, but the Panthers saw the raid as a secret intention and cover up for killing Hampton. The Chicago Tribune was part of the controversy when they published a picture that shows holes in a door jamb that allegedly came from bullets fired from inside the apartment.
