George Gershwin was one of the most significant American composers and musicians of the 20th century, famous then, yet still well known today. He was acknowledged for composing popular stage and screen numbers, as well as classical compositions. He was a prominent composer of jazz, opera, and popular songs for stage and screen, and many of his famous works are now standards in the music industry.
