Hamlet William Shakespeare wrote many great plays such as Romeo and Juliet, King Henry the 8th, and Hamlet, and many of his works still apply to the society in which we live in today. One in particular that still applies today is the play Hamlet. Hamlet is a Shakespearean tragedy, and is widely regarded as one of his best works. In today’s society Hamlet is one of the most popular plays in England, so there must be something about it that is still appealing to this generation even though the play is over five hundred years old.
One theory on why Hamlet is still so appealing today, is the fact that many people and children in today’s society have had to deal with life without their father or losing their father. In our society, it is very common for parents to split up and a child has to go through a very rough time. In some cases, the child who has just had to deal with this sad event must deal with a stepfather. In the play Hamlet, this is one of the themes. Hamlet’s uncle Claudius kills Hamlet’s father King Hamlet, and then marries Hamlet’s mother. Just like in today’s society the loss of a parent can be very traumatic, and children may not always be able to cope with it, and possibly resent the new father figure in their lives.

Now this is a pretty obvious statement, but the characters in Hamlet show both sides of humanity which is very interesting. In today’s society everyone has their good characteristics and bad characteristics, and the play Hamlet does a very good job of showing this. In today’s society we call people who act shady and are mischevious snakes.
