In the story of “Harrison Bergeron”, George and Hazel Bergeron’s son is murdered, but because of the world they live in they cannot mourn the way normal parents might. The reader must conclude their own thoughts on what they think is right or wrong with how George and Hazel reacted to Harrison’s death. These are some things the reader must know and take into consideration to make a fair judgement of the two parents. George Bergeron had well-above average intelligence but was required by law to wear a special small handicap transmitter that would send sharp waves of random sound every twenty seconds, impairing him the ability to use his intelligence. He also was required to wear a forty-seven pound bag of birdshot which was padlocked around his neck. Therefore, he cannot think too long on his son. Hazel can’t remember much at all, she only knows of how she feels an ache from which she cannot rid herself of. They see him on the television and George recognizes the stomping sound to be his son because he’s heard it many times in his own household, but he doesn’t hold the thought for long when another wave of horribly loud noises fill his head drowning the thought with it. Hazel must have noticed her son but wasn’t able to hold onto the idea for long as she was only able to think in short bursts. When Harrison was shot, Hazel began to cry and George’s handicap made him completely black out. When he awoke and went to the kitchen to fetch a beer, he can back to see Hazel crying, he asked her why and she responded with “I don’t remember”, concluding that must have both forgot the death of their only son because of the society they live in and the conditions and rules they were
