What is innocence? It’s defined as lack of corruption; purity. In To Kill A Mockingbird, there are many symbols that are used. The most important is the mockingbird, symbolizing innocence. Authors use symbols in writing to help a complex idea be expressed in simpler terms, this symbol is included to help convey the idea of innocence. The mockingbird symbol is perfect for communicating the theme and aligns flawlessly with the characters of Jem Finch, Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson.

A good man presented as a disturbed individual because he never left his house; he stayed isolated from the outside world. False rumors were created about him; like that he stabbed his father in the leg, that he ate animals, and that he stared at people through his window at night. In reality, he was misunderstood. He put a blanket around Scout when she was cold and sewed Jem's pants when they got caught on the fence. He brought kindness into the world. That was especially demonstrated when he fought off the attempted killing of the Finch kids by Mr. Ewell. He is a mockingbird because of his goodness. Mockingbirds make the world a better place; they don’t harm anyone and sing, and that’s why “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”(Lee 103), a sin to kill the innocent. As a black man who was accused of raping a white woman during the 1930s, the verdict was already decided. He claimed that he went to help her with something and it wasn’t his first time doing so. She claimed he beat her and took advantage of her. The explanation given by him was realistic; few believed it. Persuasive evidence indicated that Tom did nothing wrong, including that the “raped” woman had bruises on the right side of her face likely done by a left-handed person. Tom was right-handed with his left arm disfigured. The verdict was still guilty. Tom Robinson was an innocent, good-hearted man wronged in many ways within his society; despite that, he continued helping people. His willingness to help regardless of the prejudice done to him is what makes him a mockingbird. When he got to the jail and tried escaping, he was killed.
