The law gives employers a lot of leeway in creating the culture they desire in their workplace, and this includes allowing employers to decide how employees should dress and groom. Some employers like to set a professional tone by requiring employees to wear suits. Other employers like to foster a more creative environment by allowing employees to wear T-shirts and blue jeans. Just about any rule is fine, as long as it doesn't violate laws against discrimination or harassment. (Deplo, 2015) When an employee agrees to what the companies expectation are in the dress code, the employee is expected to follow the rules.
Letting up on the dress code gives students to express them selves. This is important because it helps them makes friends easier and faster. It also gives them a chance to show what they like to show people they have the same interests that they might have. If the students want to wear it then they want to try something new and there obviously comfortable in it if they want to wear it. This also gives students a chance to see what kind of style they like and it gives them chances to experiment a little bit, but if the dress code is strict then they will be stuck wearing the same old thing and never try anything new.
If a typical public high school student heads to work, they would not feel comfortable with the dress code that the workplace requires as they are not used to it. However, if the same student is used to the dress code, they would feel more comfortable and at more ease with the workplace as they dealt with a dress code in high school. This is one reason why public high schools should adopt dress codes for the students.
Most employee handbook packets will include a section for dress code. I would insure if I were a human resources director for a company that each new employee understands the dress code expectations. Furthermore, I would insist that every new employee be introduced to their immediate coworkers on their first day, this would allow the workers to give the new employee a chance to present themselves before they make a negative judgment. If John had been given the opportunity to be introduced to his new coworkers on his first day they may not have made the same split-second judgments of him based on his manner of dress. I believe these strategies would be very easy to justify to the company president as implementing a dress code in an employee handbook is essential to most businesses.
School Dress codes do not allow students to completely express their individuality. Schools want students to be able to think for themselves and create a sense of who they are, but it is not easy when they are forced to abide by rules that take away from from that. It should be a place of expressing ourselves freely in a learning environment without having to worry about what we wear as an interfering issue. The fact that the school system cares more about the student dress code than their education is an issue in itself. Schools should promote dress code individuality because of religious aspects, mental health, and human experience.
