Why Is It Important To Be Convicted Rapists?

Across the world and every year, over 95,000 people are raped (where did this come from? lol). Among those, the majority of victims raped are women. Of course, not all sexual assaults are reported. For those that are reported, most of rapists are not convicted. In fact, different court systems have not convicted rapists of anything at all, and they left the assault and rape allegations off of their file. Many will question why is it that only 5.7% of rapists are convicted, yet almost 17% of robbers are (this?). Rape victims will claim that they feel as though someone has stole something very important from them, so wouldn’t robbery and rape be considered the same? Some may say that there are rape cases that include men, and while that is true, only a small fraction of men get raped in comparison to women. Almost all of the rapes that occur include women as the victims, and rape has become so frequent with women that ⅕ of all women are expected to be raped in their lifetime. For men, these statistics are different, and only 9% of rape cases reported are with men as victims (Statistics About Sexual Violence). It’s a widely known fact that talking about rape can be very overwhelming, especially if the person talking about it has been raped. Some speculate that the reason victims don’t report rape is because they’re afraid that they would be seen as promiscuous and as someone who wanted the rape to happen. This is not entirely true, and many victims don’t report for several different reasons. Of rape and sexual violence cases, ⅕ of victims don’t report because they’re afraid of the rapist doing it again (The Criminal Justice System: Statistics). According to Nigel Morris’ article, “100,000 Assaults, 1,000 Rapists Sentenced. Shocking Low Conviction Rates Revealed,” many women are raped by co-workers or their bosses. These women are discouraged from reporting these rape incidents because they don’t want to be fired.
