Certifications are an important item in the tech industry. A certification on a resume or business card shows that you have theoretical and practical knowledge. If an employer read your resume and notes it has a Cisco CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification, for example, your skills on how to configure, operate, manage a Cisco network and solve problems are validated. Even though a certificate is normally required for this jobs, a previous verifiable experience is also required in non-entry levels. In the last year the most popular vendors in the various tech classifications were Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco, EMC (VMware), Citrix, ISACA (CISA) and Amazon (AWS). All of them have multiple certifications available for the IT industry. The most common alternative to a certification to improve a resume is working as an intern or in a junior position in a company that could provide you the experience in the field that you are looking to improve, this being a common practice in the IT careers. The obvious disadvantage is that this normally means a low salary at the beginning.
