The richest man of all time has his legacy divided between business and philanthropy. John D. Rockefeller was a leader, an American businessman, and philanthropist, founder of the Standard Oil Company, the largest oil company of the nineteenth century. Rockefeller was also the first American to accumulate one billion dollars. In 1870, John Davison Rockefeller founded the Standard Oil Company, a company that began in Ohio, and was founded along with Brother William Rockefeller, Henry Flagler, Jabez Bostwick, the chemist Samuel Andrews and Stephen V. Harkness. With the growth of the oil industry, the company, led by John D. Rockefeller, became the largest company in the world, monopolizing the newly created oil market. As the importance of
