Mary was born on February 18, 1516. Her parents were Catherine of Aragon and King Henry VIII. She had two siblings, Edward VI and Elizabeth I. Mary was their only child to make it past childhood. She had a happy childhood and was always the center of attention. When her mother gave no sons, Henry divorced her, but not legally. Because Henry could not divorce Catherine legally, he switched England from Catholicism to his own religion. And sent Catherine to the tower until she dies. After, her father married Anne Boleyn, Mary was no longer called “Princess,” but now called, “The Lady Mary.” She was no longer allowed in court. Mary knew if she left, she would forfeit the crown. After, plots started to be made to put Elizabeth and Edward Courtenay on the throne. In all, 100 were killed and 400 pardoned others. Mary killed Jane and her husband, fore they may be a part of another rebellion. Elizabeth was sent to London, and then put in the tower for the majority of her life. She took the throne in 1553, and became the first queen of England. Reigning from 1553 to 1558, about 5 years, 3 months and 29 days. Her coronation was on October 1 at the Westminster Abbey. Three days after, she began to introduce new legislations. First, legalize her parents’ marriage. Second, rid all legislative laws passed during her fathers’ reign, which did not go by easily for the people. In January 1555, arrests began for people who refused to give up their heretical activities. By burning them at the stake, only made the people hate her more. In all, 275 more people were killed.
