First Last Name Ms. Roberts ELA __ 15 March, 2017 Suratt’s Hanging What is your opinion on Mary Surratt’s terrible, unneeded hanging? Mary Surratt was an innocent woman who was accused of helping John Wilkes Booth with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. She got hanged for it, but the person who actually did do something to help John Wilkes, Dr Mudd, didn’t get hanged, he got life in prison.
Anyone who tried to bring any changes were excluded and under accusation. Mary Warren was excluded from the group of girls, just as she tried to make changes in the situation by telling the truth. The girls accused Mary of sending her spirit on them, in page 101 “Mary, do you send this shadow on me?’ and page 107 “Oh, please, Mary! Don’t come down.”
Mary Surratt should not have executed. Mary Surratt was not a good woman, but she did not deserve to be executed by the government. It was possible that Mary Surratt knew about the kidnapping, but she should have never been executed by government on the spot. In source one it states “ At her trial, Surratt was defened by several priests and friends the New York times called “ constant and faithful.” Several priests and friends would have never defend her if they thought she was guilty.
MARY SURRATT WAS GUILTY AND WAS RIGHTFULLY EXECUTED. Mary Surratt was guilty and was rightfully executed because, she hid guns for John Wilkes Booth behind her husbands tavern. Also she was a close friend to John Wilkes Booth when the police came they asked her, where is your friend John wilkes Booth. Mary Surratt hid guns for John Wilkes Booth, that were later on used to kill Abraham Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth said he would pick up the guns or shooting irons with a small package.

Despite being present in the woods that night, Mary had only watched as the other girls danced, and she had wanted to tell the truth from the very beginning. However, she was, as always, easily manipulated into going along with the trials, not sure entirely sure if witchcraft was involved. This became apparent when she testified against Abigail in court. When asked to prove that her previous fainting in court was all staged, she explained, “I - I used to faint because I - I thought I saw spirits” (Miller 107). The truth had become so skewed that Mary had become as brainwashed as the rest of the town, believing there were really witches attacking
The cops came to her house and asked her some questions that she really didn 't know about. But after the assassination the cops came again and asked her some more question that she did know but acted like she didn 't know what was going on. The cops noticed that she was acting weird and caught on to it that she really knew about it and that she helped Both kill the president. So the fact that she acted kind of silly and isn 't very good at hiding things she gave herself up. The way they decide to kill Mary was a little harsh for what little she did, Mary Surratt should not be hanged for her crimes.
First, let’s start with the prosecution witnesses. They called a neighbor, police officer, and professional psychiatrist. The neighbor was called to attest to Mary’s character and party life style. It helped show that she made bad decisions and had poor judgment at times, but it does not equate to murder. Not everyone who drinks kills their baby.
“Patrick! She called. How are you darling. She put the parcel down and went into the living room and when she saw him lying on the ground.” Mary also creates an act that makes the detectives believe that she did not do anything to do with the murder.
