Why Is Money Worth The Cost Of Space Exploration?

The money used to conduct space missions and experiments involving space has drastically increased in the past decade. Currently the requested budget of NASA’s space exploration program for 2018 is “[a]t $19.1 billion” dollars and is increasing each year (Beutel). This is not necessarily unwelcome because the more money they have means they can conduct addition missions each year and improve space exploration strategies faster. Space exploration has been a prodigious part of human history for thousands of years. Dating back to the late 1500s, Galileo Galilei studied many of the planets within our solar system. Other people might say there are better ways to use the money invested in space exploration. Additionally, most people also believe the money should be used to explore our oceans, since they make up 70 percent of Earth and we have only explored five percent of all oceans (United). Also, are we benefiting from space exploration or are we losing more than we gain from it? These questions make it hard for people to believe that space exploration is worth it. Some view space exploration as a waste of resources, for example, resources used to build spaceships, and the use of natural resources to make rocket fuel. Is there a better way those resources could be used on Earth? The next problem is the future involving space technologies. Robots and artificial intelligence are becoming a large part of modern day life. People may be concerned about how space is influencing the development of technology.
