Bettina Love supports her thesis that the education system is broken and unsupportive of dark children through history. The reason we learn history is to learn from the mistakes and successes of others; Dr. Love points out that the negative aspects of American history are still prevalent today. After the Civil War, former slaves worked as sharecroppers for plantation owners in hopes of repaying debt. The debt was impossible to pay, and the plantation owners continued to put the former slaves to work without fair pay. Love analogizes the situation to the broken education system, saying that, “black students are sharecroppers, never able to make up the cost or close the gap because they are learning in a state of perpetual debt with no relief in sight” ((Love, 2019, p. 92).
Andrew Carnegie was a significant person in history because he was a wealthy businessman living the American dream, a dream everyone hoped to experience but never did. Coming from humble beginnings, Carnegie came from Scotland to America as a poor immigrant working from job to job before becoming a secretary on the Pennsylvania railroad. He was a diligent worker and was paid in forms of stock which Carnegie eventually sold, allowing him to begin the Carnegie Steel company. By 1900, Carnegie had around 20,000 employees producing more steel than England because he constantly found cheaper production methods for making steel. However, unlike the other monopoly holders, Carnegie donated nearly $350,000 out of the $400,000 to charitable organizations
In her 2013 “Bowie State University Commencement Speech”, found in They Say/I Say, Michelle Obama, the current First Lady of the United States, uses several rhetorical strategies, including historical references and appeals to emotion and history, in order to drive her central message of the importance of education and the responsibly of her audience to deliver the legacy of education to the next generation. Throughout the piece, Obama relays a historical analysis of the progress made in education for African Americans, including an exploration of the toil and sacrifice made over the decades so that that progress could come to pass. She concludes by calling the graduating students to action to carry on the legacy of educational excellence that
The history of the United States of America has often been punctuated by moments of triumph, and also by grievous lapses in moral and ethical judgements. For years, students have learned about the entirety of our country’s history in school. However, a school board in Colorado recently attempted to prevent this from happening. Their decision to alter the American history curriculum in order to promote patriotic values angered many students, who then protested this decision. Leonard Pitts, a journalist for the Miami Herald, openly criticized the school board’s move.
I have learned so much from my high school american history course so far and I’m genuinely shocked by how interesting the information we are learning is. When I generally think about history it bores me but when I started learning about history this year everything changed. I think it’s very important to know history because without those historic events we quite possibly wouldn’t be where we are today. So that’s what I will be trying to do.

1. After watching this video I learned that the first generation college students in the late 1960s struggled so much so we could be in this excellent program so we could succeed. Nobody should ever be neglected an education like those students. We have many opportunities as the result of their actions and sacrifices because they fought so that this program could be as successful as it is. If those courageous students would have not spoken up and fight for their rights I would have not been here right now.
James Baldwin wrote “A Talk to Teachers” in the early 1960s for the purpose of publicizing the “current”, “very dangerous…menace” that plagues our country - our educational system. As Baldwin develops his argument, he utilizes various historical prejudices that have been criminally ignored in the classroom and the effects that these lies have had on our society as a whole. To him, hiding our country’s scars threatens our nation as the majority of that generation grows up ignorant and complacent - a generation that “will simply obey the rules of society”. History has shown that if people fail to fight for the truth and fail to fight for change, then our “society [will] perish.” Through various examples, Baldwin illustrates that the only way
After spending some time in Van Diemen’s Land as a "ticket of leave" prisoner, Meagher married a local woman who also gave birth to a son, Thomas Francis III. In 1852 Meagher escaped Van Diemen’s Land on a rowboat. He spent a few days at sea before he was picked up by an American vessel, and from there made his way to New York in the United States. From there he became a strong voice in the New York, where he was self-proclaimed to practice at the New York Bar where he got involved and active in the movement Irish independence. He gave many public speeches during his time in New York, and his gifts for speaking would soon to make him a celebrity of New York.
The Warner Brothers were the first major film studios to produce a majority of gangster related films. Scarface(1932) and Little Caesar(1931) were some of the many gangster films that were filmed. With that being said, these two films had many similarities and different characteristics that makes the film unique from one another. To begin with, both of the main protagonist in the film had a similar goal of acquiring wealth and power through the crime industry.
During my sophomore year, Advanced Placement United States History class quickly became my favorite course. I was one of the youngest in my class, surrounded by mostly upperclassmen who seemed to know exactly what they were doing. Intimidated by this class, I poured myself into my studies and fell in love with history, especially the creation of the United States. The debates between Federalists and Jeffersonians about the future of America, the enactment of Enlightenment ideals in this new experiment of a country, the creation of the Articles of Confederation, and then the Constitution, and later all the Amendments fascinated me. The complexity of all these issues and the fundamental question underlying these issues, how to create the best government, piqued my interest in a way completely different than the formulas and equations of my Chemistry classes.
As a History-Profession major, I can assure Chancellor Lecter that the history department has been neglected. Our computer lab condition is deplorable and there is barely any class room space. Our professors are working extremely hard and being over looked. The History Department and others like it, are important in the development of critical thinking among the students. When transition for a community of learning to a institution of business the need for critical thinking disappears.
As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Donovan Livingston, a graduate at Harvard Graduate School of Education, has similar views on education. His passionate and inspiring speech called “Lift Off” was given at HGSE’s Commencement Ceremony on May 25, 2016. The speech discusses the importance of education as well as the obstacles and injustices students, especially those of color, have experienced throughout history in getting an education. Livingston’s graduating classmates who are becoming teachers, as well as teachers and educators in general, are the audience of his speech.
Though testing is necessary with the current structure of evaluating students, there is a conscience effort to improve schooling for students. Hoping to stay teaching in Eastern Washington, I am excited to see teachers setting the foundation for change. I hope that I have the opportunity to not only help my students inside the classroom but also in a more political way that will help students that I am not teaching. Like many things that I’ve experienced in these last ten weeks of class, my thoughts on education have definitely been
