The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg is an image of a bespectacled pair of eyes painted on a billboard being advertised in the in the Valley of Ashes. Fitzgerald’s image of the eyes overlooking the Valley of Ashes represent the eyes of God watching and judging this American society. Based upon the events that occur in this novel I would imagine His opinion of the society would be a downhearted perspective. Reasons as to why this is topic is the most important theme in the novel include the sins of this society such as; Tom Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson’s affair, Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan’s affair, and Gatsby’s death caused by George Wilson.

Even though Daisy was in loved with Gatsby before she was with Tom, she still chose to marry Tom because Gatsby took to long to come back. When Daisy started seeing Gatsby again, she realized that she should have waited for Gatsby to return so they could be together. When Tom figures out that his wife was seeing Gatsby he challenged Gatsby’s claim for Daisy. Gatsby and Tom argued over this situation and Gatsby’s plan was for Daisy to tell Tom that they were never in love and that she always loved Gatsby. In chapter 7 of the novel, Daisy says to Gatsby, “‘Oh, you want too much!’ she cried to Gatsby. “I love you now - isn’t that enough? I can’t help what’s past.” She began to sob helplessly. “I did love him once - but I love you too.”’ With Gatsby still trying to convince Daisy to come back to him, they drove home and Gatsby lets Daisy drive. While passing through the Valley of Ashes, Myrtle comes running out of her house in front of the car thinking Tom is the driver. Daisy hit and killed Myrtle, and the two drove off frightened. George Wilson was struck with sorrow once his wife died. When Tom found out that his mistress’ killer drove off in a “yellow car”, he told George that he recognized the description of the car to be Gatsby’s , not knowing Daisy was the actual driver. After Myrtle’s death and Gatsby being blamed for her death, George took it upon himself to make Gatsby pay for what happened. While Gatsby was in the pool waiting for a phone call from Daisy, George sneaks into his house and suddenly the phone rung. As Gatsby excitingly gets out the pool to answer to whom he thinks is the love of his life, George pulls out his pistol and shoots Gatsby in his back and shoots himself right after. When Daisy finds out that Gatsby was murdered she moved out of town with her family and was never heard of
