For a person to be “great” they would have to be honorable, truthful and caring all year round. A great person would be brave and loyal to the end: their trust never wavering. Many traits of a person could be described as “great”, and in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is known to the world as a great person: in reality he is nothing close. After the official introduction between the men, Nick noticed “[Gatsby] smiled understandingly...It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life.” (Fitzgerald 52). Nick then realizes that “some time before [Gatsby] introduced himself [Nick] got a strong sense that he was picking his words with care”(Fitzgerald 53). Nick at first sight did not notice Gatsby as he only saw him and talked to him like he was a guest. After that he truly noticed how humble he looked on the outside, Gatsby keeping a cool and caring facade. At second glance, Nick noticed Gatsby sounded like he was hiding or concealing something, which he finds out was the truth about Jay Gatz later on. Tom later on reveals some truth about how Gatsby acquired his life now; all by chance of fate. Not only is Daisy in tears from the sight, Jordan and Nick speechless, but Gatsby is stunned by the information Tom attained from his sources.
