The days were long and arduous and the never-ending workload I had every day of my entire life so far was tiring. It has been about 30 years since I have been an enslaved person. I had been born into this tough life. It definitely was not a walk in the park. However, I’ve seen how everyone was treated, and this was not the way we should be handled. My name is Samuel Sharpe in fact, my captain also carries the same name. He is a well-known lawyer in Montego Bay, Jamaica. While I was born in the parish of St. James. From there, I began travelling to different parishes in Jamaica, educating my brothers about Christianity, which I believed promised freedom. I spoke to my fellow brothers about the injustices of slavery and pointed out that the bible said “No man can serve two masters”- Matthew 6:24 KJV [1]. This gave me the opportunity to educate and open the eyes of my people so that they can see that we have our rights. My complexion and hair should not define my life and how I should be treated. Our only master is God, and I worship him to my heart. Once they listen to me and understand, we can join and stand in unity. The information that I have read from the local and foreign newspapers, I shared this with the other slaves. I trust that this would make them believe in what is right and together we can put an end to this for once and for all. If not, the barbarism continues.
