Not long after the United States constitution was created, the country witnessed a growing debate over how to explain and apply the presentation of the new constitution. During the 1790s the United States federal government took charge in a series of threats to the country such as international tensions. Most importantly the formation of competing political parties which were the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans. Today the United States is predominately a two party system although more political parties exist, American voters usually side with one of the main two which are the Democrats or the Republicans. They distrusted the constitution and believed in a strong state government. Republicans were mostly southern farmers who also believed in America to remain a country-side nation of small farmers dedicated to republican values. This political party was known as Jeffersonian Republican because of Jeffersons influence. Jefferson believed in localized state governments held together, untied by a federal government. Democratic Republicans did not trust the national government and they defended states’ rights. They also distrusted bankers, cared little for commerce and manufacturing. The Democratic Republicans preferred a strict interpretation of the constitution and placed their trust in the people not the hands of the high members. In the textbook it states one of Jefferson’s famous quotes, “The will of the majority, the natural law of every society, is the only sure guardian of the rights of men.”(Tindall, 270) Jefferson insisted that that majority of the people will be the only safeguard of the rights of the United States’
