The Declaration of Independence was written at a time where the colonies were tired of British influence in their daily lives. It has come to be one of three most important documents in U.S. history. It gave us independence against King George. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, the United State’s third president.
Imagine being under the rule of the British King. Well, thanks to the Declaration of Independence we no longer have to be under British rule. As the colonies grew, they were able to build a thriving country , establishing their own currency, banking system, army and postal service. Through the efforts of the Continental Congress and specifically, Thomas Jefferson, the rights and freedoms we enjoy today are solely independent of the royal crown.
The Seven Year War with France put the King in a lot of debt. In order to help pay off their debt, King George decided to increase taxes on the colonists. The colonists grew tired of all the taxing which led to the Boston Tea Party. The colonist decided to throw England’s tea into the harbor in protest. This angered the King, and the colonist knew they needed to do something.

The middle listed 26 grievances the King had forced against the colonist. And it ends with the declaration of independence of the King. After Jefferson finished writing it he presented it to Benjamin Franklin and John Adams for their review. They made a few changes and then it was presented to the full Continental Congress, who made even more changes before voting on it. Twelve of the 13 colonies voted yes to declare their freedom from England once and for all . Obviously this did not set well with King George and the USA would have to fight for the next 8 years before England agreed and signed the Treaty of Paris on September 3,
