Malcolm Baldrige Award The Malcolm Baldrige Award was set up in 1987 with the marking of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Improvement Act of 1987 by President Reagan. The reason for building up this honor was to advance quality awareness and innovation and to pitch these successful techniques to U.S. organizations. This improvement in quality became apparent amid the early and mid-1980's, industry and government pioneers were seeing American organizations make quality execution a need for their organizations in the expanding and ever competitive world of business. Yet numerous American organizations did not know much about quality, consequently, numerous did not execute quality or didn't know where to start in actualizing quality control. Hence the Baldrige Award was created so that a standard of excellence in quality would exist with a specific end goal to help U. S. organizations accomplish world class status. Baldrige was an exponent of quality management who believed it was the way to the U.S's success and long term strength in business. He was a pioneer in business and management and invested much time, energy and enthusiasm for serving to write and set up the quality improvement act which was in the end titled after him. Two honors may be given every year in each of the following classes: 1. Manufacturing organizations or Subsidiaries 2. Service organizations or Subsidiaries 3. Small organizations Less than two honors may be given in a class if the high standards of the Award Program are not met. Award
