Gatsby fails to incorporate the details of his rise to the top through the world of bootlegging. Tom is the same as Gatsby because he openly lies and deceives people in The Great Gatsby. One example is at the beginning of the novel when Tom is having an affair with Myrtle. Tom was not completely truthful with Daisy about his affair and kept a separate apartment for secretive independence. Not only does Tom, deceive his wife he deceives his mistress, Myrtle.
Tom also was angry at Gatsby for having an affair with Daisy, His wife. Tom Buchanan was an arrogant, wealthy, manipulative, and abusive person. Tom exhibited these characteristics throughout the book, which resulted to Jay Gatsby's death. Tom was the one who discovered Gatsby's past as a bootlegger, which led to daisy knowing the source of his money and ultimately influenced her decision to leave Gatsby and return to Tom. This began a chain of events that led to Gatsby's death.
He is the husband of Daisy Fay, who is the object of Jay Gatsby’s desire. Daisy describes him as “brute of a man, a great, big, hulking physical specimen” Tom was an extremely narcissistic, pompous, and egotistical, individual who would try to use his wealth and power as a way to escape consequences because of his actions. Tom first shows us his true colors by revealing his affair on Daisy with a woman named Myrtle. Myrtle and Tom first met on a train while she was on her way to New York.
Tom is a Complex character of how he cheats on his wife and doesn't care if he does. In chapter- Tom had a reaction when Myrtle teased him by saying “Daisy, Daisy” that lead Tom to slap Myrtle in the face. This all is telling all of us that Tom doesn’t just hit women and cheat on his wife, it’s telling us Tom answers his problem with violence and its not a respectful way to treat women. Also another easy difference from Tom and Gatsby, Tom is a Polo player. I know it’s a cheesy answer, but it’s a difference between Tom and Gatsby.
The Great Gatsby is a story about a man with old money and that consistently cheats on his wife. Tom and Daisy are both from old money in the Midwest. They get married and moved to the east. Once Tom was uninterested in Daisy, he had a mistress in New York. In the 1920’s F. Scott Fitzgerald had many troubles with his marriage.

One important thing is that he is married to Daisy, but he is also having an affair with a woman named Myrtle. Tom is also a big time polo player.
In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of the main ideas in the story is morality. Tom Buchanan is the most morally corrupt character in the novel because he is careless and selfish. For example, Tom investigates Gatsby's life to purposely ruin his life. Not only did he ruins Gatsby's population/reputation Tom also caused his death. Some may argue that other characters in the Novel were to blame for Gatsby’s death but ultimately Tom was the one.

He made the mistake of making his happiness depend on her and could not accept the fact that she once loved Tom. As wonderful as man as Gatsby is, he is very deceitful to others of who he really is and tries to control everything. Gatsby is a man stuck in the past and with every day that passes, he gets sucked in even deeper into the abyss. Even though Tom and Gatsby had very different upbringings and live their lives completely different, in a way they are the same person. Neither one of them will admit their wrongdoings and are to self-absorbed into themselves to see what is going on around them.
J.Gatsby is one mysterious classy wealthy man he throws parties almost every day hoping that the girl that he likes will come to one of his parties. He is respectful towards women, and very loyal. Tom is a type of guy that likes keeping things on the low keeping it low profile he is irresponsible, and not respectful he is also abusive towards women, but he likes the girl that gatsby wants. They both have their strategies to get the girl that they want and they would do whatever it takes to achieve it. It all comes down to her.
Tom is talking about meeting up secretly with Myrtle and this shows that Tom feels superior to Wilson and degrades him because of his economic status. Gatsby on the other hand is an important character that shows the American Dream can only be reached by cheating, which supports their is economic and political inequalities. For example, Gatsby was a really poor child of some unsuccessful parents. He left them to pursue a better life, he was an ambitious man. Throughout most of the book people are curious about where Gatsby got his money.
She knows Tom is having affairs but she never confronts him about it. She is supposed to be a trophy wife and she is until Gatsby came back into her life. She is also blinded by love, she cannot decide between the two men in her life. Tom has the more respectable “old money,” during the time and Gatsby has her love and best interest.
