Otten | 2 Amy Otten Professor Lignelli English 121 January 17, 2016 Rap to Impact, not Battle Rappers Tupac Shakur, and Notorious B.I.G. led the East verses West coast rap battle in the early 90’s. Their song lyrics glorified violence, drug use, discrimination, and sexism. The purpose of the battle was to insult one another, brag, boast, and ultimately advocate for a stereotypical gang lifestyle. Despite all of this, rap music is one the greatest platforms for sharing a message, but hasn’t been utilized positively. If artists could incorporate positive messages to educate, provide hope, and empower, a real difference could be made in the world. Rap music has a huge following of diverse populations globally. This platform can be used to educate people and provide social awareness. Issues such as racial discrimination, and awareness of the world around them. Music can unify, and alert listeners to the positive changes they can make within their own neighborhoods. Spreading the message that treating individuals differently because of their race is against the law, and teach listeners to not be afraid to discuss issues such as HIV and suicide. If inserting this type of message even affects one listener, then that should be considered a success. …show more content…
There are so many struggles faced every day in communities around the world including poverty and drug addiction. Artists can help spread the message of hope. Especially those who were challenged with similar circumstances in their own life. It makes them relatable, and provides hope that there is a way out. Enlighten listeners that drug use is not glamorous, and educate them as to the real life chase that is considered life to a drug addict. Draw attention to the families that have been torn apart by drug use, and who have even lost a loved one. That type of raw emotion really speaks loudly, and has the ability to touch those who may be
