Upton Sinclair was born September 20, 1878 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a noted American Muckraker, social activist, and also was an American author. Sinclair went to Columbia to study law but fairly after that became interested into politics and literature. Through the years he supported for himself by writing adventure story magazines. He wrote fairly amount of books. His first book Springtime and Harvest was a great success in 1901. In 1902 Sinclair becomes a member of the Socialist party; he was also a Socialist candidate for Congress from New Jersey in 1906. One of his most famous books was The Jungle in 1906; he received a lot of fame off this book. What Upton Sinclair investigated was important to the world in my opinion. Important to the world because it reveals a lot. It shows how someone who is an immigrant or someone who does not have the best financial situation how they are affected in life. Telling how the poor lives shows to the wealthy people that look you may have it easy but some don’t. It takes them out of the mindset that the world is perfect and that no one is struggling. It gives opportunity to the poor, to get their story out and able to be heard. I liked how he exposed the meat packing companies. I think exposing them needed to be done. It exposed the meat packing company and hopefully scared the other companies as well. I hope from the book being published companies learn not to treat their workers that way and not to sell meat or any other product that they wouldn’t eat themselves. The Jungle is important part of the muckraking era because of what it did. He has inspired me to go investigative reporting and exposing companies, industries and stores that exploit their workers and treat them mean. It has opened my eyes that not everything is what it seems. Companies sell you products and make you think they put their best effort into processing and producing that
