Drugs such as steroids can help to enhance the performance of the human body. Some athletes like Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco, and Sammy Sosa use or have used performance steroids to try to get an edge over the competition. They use steroids to hit the ball farther, lift heavier, run faster, jump higher, and to develop more stamina. In most countries including the United States, the usage of performance enhancing drugs is extremely illegal, and can result in severe federal consequences. The most common type of performance enhancing drugs that athletes use to build their muscles is a type of steroid called androstenedione.

With all the performance enhancing drugs controversy around major league baseball, this is a very interesting topic to write about. Athletes that have had very successful careers such as Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco, and Sammy Sosa have been under great study over the years about their use of performance enhancing drugs. During the time Jose Canseco played for the Oakland A’s, he would inject himself with steroids quite frequently. Jose Canseco would go into the locker room restroom stalls and inject himself with steroids. The manager of the Oakland A’s at the time Tony Larussa denies that he knew anything about the player usage of steroids. When asked about the strength of Canseco Larussa stated that he got his strength from a good diet and weight lifting. In a sport where the holy grail is the beauty of hitting a homerun, these accusations seem like they could be in fact true. Majority of the players that have been accused of using performance enhancing drugs are projected hall of famers or were the franchise player of their organization. The reports made by other players have brought many other issues about the integrity of the beautiful game of baseball, which is very important to how they manage the sport. Baseball is no doubt America’s favorite pastime and it is an absolute shame to see the picture of the sport is being damaged by these convictions. Although baseball has started to be more strict on the performance enhancing drug program, it will take some time for the league to get rid of some the the issues that come with players using steroids. With testing being more strict on players, it would be probable that the number of elite players would decline in the future. The result of Sammy Sosa taking steroids was that he passed the home run record by hitting 66 big flies. Sosa broke a record that was of the longest records in the history of baseball, before he broke it no one had even came close to touching it.
Following that season, Sosa and Barry Bonds hit an unheard of 70 and 73 home runs. The drastic increase in home runs by the two sluggers led to many people questioning how they did
