“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”(Campbell). According to the article, “Why Remember," it attests that we must reminisce on the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers, who have died for their families and country to ensure that liberty is protected. The article declares that these soldiers considered their actions to be meaningful, and we should live up to that dream. Lastly, the article believes that by remembering those soldiers, we can acknowledge the difficulties and terrors they faced in order for peace to remain in Canada (Veterans Affairs Canada). In order to promote peace, we must first fathom that we must remember, reflect and most importantly learn from history.

First, Canadian military was very critical in World War II and reflecting on this was Stan Glass, the son of a veteran and a veteran his self. He spoke about his father Private Sidney Glass, who participated in multiple wars during his service in the Canadian Military. Sidney Glass was a Normandy veteran of the 4th Canadian Armor division. He was in two regiments during his time, and they included: the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada and the Argyll and Southerland Highlanders of Canada. He was born in Toronto and enlisted in the military in Toronto. Sidney Glass enlisted not for patriotic reasons but rather to help his friends and family (Glass). For example, by reflecting on the services of Sidney Glass, we can be thankful for his services during D-day and World War II. Second, the British Military was essential during the Cold War and reflecting on this was Allan Simons, a former British intelligence agent. The word “Cold War” was coined by Sir Winston Churchill and was named that because of the relations were cold. The British intelligence agency was stationed in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Germany has been divided in half by East and West Germany. The Soviets in East Germany decided to divide Belgium by a wall and anybody who crossed the wall would be killed immediately. It is very important that remember, reflect and learn from history because if we don’t we wouldn’t have a better appreciation for it. We may take what these extraordinary people throughout history have done for granted, if we don’t remember. Russell Neglia said, “Show me a nation that is great and I 'll show you a nation with a great military. If you look at all the great nations or empires of the past, you will see a common thread: a great military. No nation can call itself great without an efficient military” (Neglia).
