In the play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet fall in love secretly but face difficulties due to their destined tragedy. The characters are killed one by one in cruel ways because of the hatred and violence between the opposing forces, Capulet and the Montague families. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet should not be read in schools because violence causes hatred towards one another and mental health disorders, as shown by the constant conflicts between the two families and the characters’ continuous threat to commit suicide. Someone with healthy mindsets does not have sex as a teenager and kills others. Subjects and even phrases, Shakespeare uses, are inappropriate to young adults. Moreover, in the play, Shakespeare masks, and even romanticizes, the real problem of suicide. For example, when Romeo has to exile Verona by killing Tybalt, he yells ‘Ha, banishment? Be merciful, say “death,” For exile hath more terror in his look, Much more than death. Do not say “banishment.””(3.3.13~15). Romeo would rather kill himself than live without Juliet. This thought can promote suicide because it is demonstrating that ‘if you face a predicament, the solution is to kill yourself’. In another example, Juliet says “Be not so long to speak. I long to die”(4.1.67) to Friar Lawrence. This quote means ‘if you, Friar Lawrence, don't have a solution to my problems then I long to die’. The constant threats to commit suicide can be negative to teens who actually have suicidal thoughts. In fact, teenagers are vulnerable to negative influences since they are still growing and cannot distinguish right or wrong very well. So, the continual exposure to suicide can cause them to display the same actions when they are handling with similar events.
