Seven hours. That’s the number of hours the average teen gets of sleep each night. You might say that that’s plenty of sleep, but studies show that teenagers need nine to nine and a half hours of sleep a night. That is more than two hours less than a healthy growing teenager needs, but why are teens not getting enough sleep at night? The answer: School. For a growing child, sleep might be the most important thing. I think that school hours should be shortened because it would give kids more times to sleep at night. This would allow students to be more rested when they show up to school and would be ready to learn. It would also make students happier to go to school because they would be more open to learn. By having school get out earlier it would allow more time not only for after school activities but for homework as well. “Giving students more time after school to do homework would not only decrease stress level, but could improve the quality of work too” says Rachael D., an author for the (Huffington Post). This would also give students more study time and time to complete assignments. The third reason I think the school day should be shortened is because it would make the class periods shorter. This would cut out the time not essential for that class. On average, there is approximately ten minutes wasted before class each period. If we can cut out the ten minutes of time wasting before each class, it could reduce the time of each class period. It would also help memory retention if you can learn the same amount of information in a short time span. It can also reduce stress levels of students if they don’t have to sit around and wait for so long in between
