At 8:30 a.m., five days a week, the students of West Central Valley are expected to be in their first class and ready to learn. But some schools start earlier. I chose this topic because I have experienced going to school at three different times in the morning. I have prepared by doing extensive research on school starting times and why starting later is better. You should care about this because even if it may not affect you, it may affect other students. I am going to persuade you that schools should start the school day later, not earlier. I will persuade you by first, telling you the problem with starting school so early and the effects of it; second, telling you ways that would help in making schools start later; and finally, telling you how people will benefit from the changes that are made. I will start by telling you about the need for later starting times. Some students start school as early as 7 a.m. That might not sound that bad to you, but some students have to ride the bus, which in the mornings are an average of hour long rides. I went to school at 8:00 a.m. once, the next one started at 7:30 a.m., and finally this school, at 8:30 a.m. And trust me, 8:30 is definitely the best one out of the three. This problem is important because it’s dealing with the well-being of youth. In the U.S. the average starting time is 8:03 a.m., but only 18% of schools start at 8:30 or later (“School Start Time…”). Sleep scientists recommend that school starts at 8:30-9:00 a.m. (Lewis), because as of now, 73% of high school students get less than eight hours of sleep, 43% of them getting less than six (“Wake Up Calls…”). Not only students, but also parents are affected by this. Students can be so tired that parents have to drag them out of bed, putting a pause on their day to make sure their child is up and getting ready to go to
