In the article “Why Schools Need to Step Up Suicide Prevention Efforts” by Marty Swanbrow Becker, talks about how the theme of suicide in drama is not new. Also, it goes on to talk to about the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, and what it’s about and the effects it’s been having on people with mental illness. If mainstream media starts to talk about mental health, and suicide prevention it could lead to more lives being saved and more people understanding the importance of mental health. In 2015, 23,600 people from 10 to 24 died by suicide, which suicide is the second leading cause of death among the youth in the United States. Furthermore, nearly half of those who thought about commiting suicide, chose not to tell anyone about their suicidal thoughts. Many of the reasons why people don’t talk about their feelings are because, even though they have suicidal thoughts they are at low risk, not wanting to burden others with their problems, feeling that their thoughts are private, believing that no one will help them if they do acknowledge how they’re feeling, and being concerned about stigma. All of these facts play apart in the show because Hannah Baker doesn’t want to talk about what happened to her, she doesn’t want people to feel bad for her, she doesn't think that anyone will care if she talks about it, and when she does talk about no one does anything to help her with the way she’s feeling.
