Censorship in School Libraries- Why it Should be Stopped Censorship is an ongoing issue that affects school libraries. Censorship is the restriction of books, movies, etc., due to the content within. This must be stopped because it violates the First Amendment, in the Bill of Rights, but also, the Library Bill of Rights. Another reason, censorship should not be allowed in school libraries is because, readers should be mindful of things that are going on in their surroundings. The last reason why censorship must be stopped is because of how children want to know more about another religion, but the books are banned, due to the fact that they include religion. The first reason why censorship should not be allowed in school libraries is because it violates the rights to speech, reading, and thought. In other words, not being able to read what is wanted can go against the right to reading what you want. This right is described in the Library Bill of Rights, “A person’s right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views” (Library Bill of Rights 5). Furthermore, not being able to have a say in what should or should not be censored goes against the right to freedom of speech. Thirdly, having censorship limits the right to think because, you wouldn’t get to hear all the sides to a certain issue (which also limits the amount of knowledge that students are to have). In a recent survey conducted, the question, “Do you think censorship being used in school libraries go against your rights?” was asked, and 78.8% (26 seventh graders) of 33 students replied the answer, Yes.
