767 Words4 Pages

Evolution refers to the adaption of species in a population who genetically changed due to environmental stresses. According to “The Facts of Evolution,” by Ernst Mayr the five general tenets of evolutionary theory are evolution, descent without modification, gradualism, multiplication, and natural selection. These tenets refer to concepts that support the theory of evolution. For example, gradualism refers to an evolutionary change in a population under a certain number of generations. Gradualism can be seen in the Guppies example of sexual selection in which a population gradually changes it morphology to increase their likelihood of having their genetic information pass on to the next generation. Therefore, according to natural selection a species is considered to …show more content…

According to the authors of “Why Should Students learn Evolution,” evolution should be taught in school because it is the basic principle of biology or of any scientific study. As a biological science major, I had to take an evolutionary course. When taking this course, I thought it was a pointless class because it seemed obvious that evolution took place. However, throughout, my path in many other biology courses I have learned that evolution is important. You must understand how natural selection works so you can understand the genetics, molecular, ecology, and physiological aspects of how varies species have adapted. Therefore, by understanding the principles of evolution we can understand how our daily life and health are affected by our environment. According to “Why Should Students Learn Evolution,” understanding evolution helps us understand modern medicines, therefore, we are able to improve our knowledge in the origins of genetic diseases and how to treat these diseases such as sickle cell
