The movie didn’t feel as sad to me. My opinion on the book is that it could’ve been better. I think it would be improved if it was longer. There wasn’t very much detail and the ending wasn’t good.

The book was very informative of life when racism was more apparent. I think that books like this show that standing up to racism is an option. It shows that even children of a younger age were involved in the situation.
Most of the information is presented in a recessive way rather than a factual statement. Meaning that instead of the author coming out and stating an event or factual evidence they present it in a way that forces the reader to look for it, this is done because some information may not be needed by anyone, someone, or everyone. Lots of information in this book was useful to me in many ways. Reading the story about Melinda has shown me that sometimes, people just need someone to talk to. That even though people may act fine and seem fine they may be very distanced from true happiness because of something that happened in there past, and if they do not have someone that will listen to them then they may allow it to define their future, but, if someone is willing to just listen to them, then they may be able to get past the traumatic event(s) that they are letting define them.

Lastly this book was banned do to violence relating to her alcoholic dad. Her father in the book clearly is an alcoholic as the reader can see his struggle when he tries to withdraw. This behavior is definitely not something that should be promoted and with someone mature reading it they can see how bad alcohol is, the struggle with addiction, and it how dependent it makes someone. There is still a great takeaway from this book
I believe if she was as close to her parents as she claimed, they would have recognized the change in their daughter. Aside from the negative aspects of this book it was a suspenseful read. The journal format that the book is written in makes it much more interesting because it is explained in the words of the narrator herself. It allows the readers to have a closer connection to the character and allows us to enter her thoughts. In my opinion this makes the ending much more tragic.
Personal Response: I thought this was a good book and it got right to the point. I liked how the author made Lucas 's family a part of the fire department. It gave it an inside look on how the firefighters were affected. I really liked that there were facts about the real September 11th at the very end of the book.
Just from reading this much, the parenting style in this book is ridiculous and the kids made the right choices as they got older to be successful. RoseMary
My responses to this first part of the book are confusion and sympathy, I felt pity for Lori because she don't deserve to get this sort of illness, especially when she was just starting her life and the fact that she had no clue about what was going on to her. I felt a little bit confused on the part that she was having
That book sure caused me a great deal of heartaches and tears. It was about a boy being abused and starved by his mother. As far as I can remember, it was the first book that made me feel pain. The agony I felt when i realized such terrible people existed in this world. The book made me aware of the dark side of people.

What I disliked about the book and had me confused would be how the school staff, the nurses and the teachers did not see the abuse earlier on. In the beginning of the book, when David goes to the nurse, the nurse tells him that he has been injured many times and that David has given multiple excuses for his injuries, what got me confused is how the nurse could have not suspect anything prior after more than three incidents have occurred.
