Playing and watching sports are one of our greatest pastimes and millions across the globe keep up with the sports culture that comes with their favorite teams. One thing most fans aren’t a fan of is when their favorite players gets suspended. We often see the biggest reason for a suspension is because of a drug violation. Drugs are very frowned upon in the sports community across all sports, when some of the drugs these players get in trouble for have no effect on their performance or health. While some drugs should obviously be banned from sports, some should be allowed for the players to use at their will with no fear of consequences. Doping is when a player will use a performance enhancing drug (PED) to perform better, build muscle, increase energy, etc. Commissioners and coaches discourage any kind of PEDs because some of these drugs can be harmful and addicting. PEDs are banned because it ruins the integrity of sports by encouraging behaviors that aren’t safe (Reardon and Creado). If players were free to use PEDs in sports or competitions, some players will become much better athletes than others with half the effort involved. Allowing players to use these drugs will not only give them unfair advantages, but also encourage more players to take the drugs. The research I’ve found agrees with me because of the harmful effects PEDs have and how it ruins the integrity of sports. However, I disagree with their stance on substances like marijuana. The research I’ve found is against any drug use because while substances like marijuana don’t affect the body, they affect the mind and they argue that that can alter one’s performance. Many players suffer chronic pain and mental issues due to the constant trauma they experience in each game and can’t do anything about it because they’ll be punished by coaches and officials if they seek help from some drugs (Reardon and Creado).
