A lot of the problems is that students do not know what books they like, reading is not a habit for them, or they just simply have time. It also talks about how students do not like to read because they do not have the skills or habits and need to develop them more in order to become a better reader. She says the best way to teach students to read more independently is to allow them time to read the book they choose in class. The reason for letting the students choose their own book is to let students read what interests them. She says that if we give students time to read in class they will form good reading habits on their own.
