Why Take AVID? AVID, which stands for Advancement via Individual Determination, is a college-readiness course designed to prepare students for their college career. The program places emphasis on growing critical thinking, writing, organization, teamwork, and reading skills, which are all needed to be successful in college. Though these skills are useful whether you plan to attend college or not, you should only take AVID if you are college-bound. From ninth grade, up until you are a senior, AVID focuses heavily on the necessary steps it takes to prepare you for college. Each year begins with students preparing for the Pre-Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) or the American College Test (ACT) so that they are ready to participate in the actual version of these exams during their junior and/or senior year. AVID employs college tutors to work with students two hours per week in their needed academic areas. Students are required to come to class prepared with questions which the tutors are assist them, primarily in small groups. The AVID student will be able to develop a system of notetaking that helps them record, analyze, and evaluate course concepts as these notes will be the focus of the tutorial study group sessions. The tutors do not provide direct answers; rather, they assist the student with the process of learning through inquiry (asking questions to lead the student to their solution).
