On August 6th, 1945 at 8:16 AM, the Enola Gay, an B-29 bomber, dropped the world 's first atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. This was a uranium bomb, and it was codenamed the Little Boy. Approximately 80,000 lives were lost in this event. On August 9th, at 11:02 AM, the Bockscar, an B-29 bomber, dropped the second atomic bomb ever used in war. This bomb was a plutonium bomb, codenamed the Fat Man. An estimated 40,000 were instantly killed, and 80,000 people were killed in total. On those days, many lives were lost, but the United States was fully justified in dropping these atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. President Harry Truman’s decision to drop these bombs was justified because the Japanese surrendered, the bomb saved both Japanese and American lives, and the dropping of these bombs were necessary to shorten the war. …show more content…
The Japanese Emperor Hirohito realized that after the deadly events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, not surrendering would cause more destruction to the country. This meant abandoning their original Ketsu-Go plan.This was a complex defense strategy made by the Japanese, on how they would fight this battle. There were many points on the ways the Imperial army would attack the American’s once they arrived, and their plan to extort many casualties upon the United States. Surrendering would never be an option, but after the use of atomic warfare, the final decision was to abandon the plan and save the lives of innocent Japanese
