"A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It's where the rich use public transportation" according to the former Mayor of Bogota, Enrique Peñalosa, who during his mayoralty developed the Transmilenio, a bus rapid transit, improving the transit system that serves Bogota. On account of this, the govern of Dominican Republic should offer easy access to citizens with bikes and lanes for it. Because three of the reasons which why we should set up a public bike-sharing system in our country is the health, economy and productivity benefits that we can get from this transportation system. An event example that can help us understand better is this one described by the former director and founder of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the engineer Hamlet Hermann, who estimated the remaining in a traffic jam for one hour could cost the driver about $2. 319 pesos; including the value and depreciation of the vehicle, consumption of fuels and lubricants, among other indicators. Considering that the country has more than two million vehicles registered with the Directorate General of Internal Revenue, this calculation becomes total losses of at least five billion pesos approximately or $136 million dollars per hour cap. In view of that fact, this system might help us by not spending money on gas and car maintenance, and maybe use all the money that we are saving for something more important such as our health or education. Another economical benefit is that the person that will use this system or just cycling with his own bike, it's more likely to have a closer connection to what is around him. This will make him more curious and maybe motivate him to do some investment, so this person will be supporting the local identity of the place that his visiting maybe. The public bike sharing system will create more employment opportunities.
