I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and I am on page 304. The book is about Scout, her brother Jem, and their friend Dill who are growing up learning about segregation, as in Tom Robinson’s court case. In this journal I will be questioning and evaluating. Why would Bob and Mayella lie? The first reason the Ewells lie is to protect themselves. First, they need to protect the family from looking like liars. Since they accused Tom Robinson of raping Mayella, they need to stick with their story by covering up that lie with more lies. Next, Mayella needs to protect herself from looking like a liar. One of them is that he is innocent. First, during the court case, Tom is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. She said that he strangled her and punched her in the right eye. Tom would need both of his hands to strangle her and would need to be left handed to punch her right eye. Tom has a limp lift arm so there is no way that he could have done it. Next, he knows his story. He does not have to back up his answers because he knows what he is talking about, whereas Mayella has to prove what she is saying because she wants everyone to think that she is telling the truth. Last, Tom did not understand Mayella’s intentions. When she told him that she was saving up money so the kids could go out for ice cream, Tom thought she was just being nice. Mayella had sent them away so that Tom and her could be alone. Another Characteristic of Tom is that he is accepting. First, Tom knows that the only reason that he is guilty is because he is black. If he was not black there would be no discussion between the jury; he would be innocent. Next, Tom stays calm throughout the trial. Tom knows he is going to be guilty but he stays calm, tells his side of the story and answers questions. Last, he does not freak out. When he finds out that he is guilty, he just accepts it.
