The Great Gatsby is full of wonder and mystery, but why do people act certain ways or why do people say certain things. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a battle for the same girl named Daisy who is married to Tom Buchanan. Tom is a very rich and upstanding person in this world and only rivaled by one person, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby had a previous relationship with Daisy and after seeing her Gatsby still has feelings for Daisy. “She’s never loved you. She loves me.” ” (Fitzgerald 79). The reason Gatsby said this is because 5 years Gatsby and Daisy were in a relationship before Gatsby went to Europe to fight in the war. During that time Daisy married Tom but never really felt anything for him Daisy still had a special place for Gatsby. Gatsby still has feelings for Daisy 5 years later and this is important because this affects the way he acts and talks around Daisy. This also affects Daisy and Tom because they are married and live in the same house and by the end of the book they can’t stand one another. Lastly, another piece of Gatsby’s past tells us why he is so rich. Fitzgerald says that Gatsby is from North Dakota and very poor however at some point he was able to afford Oxford. “I was brought up in America but educated in Oxford because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years.” (Fitzgerald 50).
