Based on the definition that a civilized society has “a well-developed culture, an effective government, and that it treats the people who live there fairly.” The Igbo and British cultures presented in Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart” both show how and what a civilized society looks like.

One reason why both the Igbo and British cultures are successful is because they have a well-developed culture. The definition of an effective government is “a government is effective, efficient, and accountable.” The Igbo have an effective government because the oldest male in the family is in charge of the family and they must listen to the head of the village if there are any changes that must be made. The British also have an effective government because they were aggressive with everything that had to deal with the government and making money. The definition of treating people who live there fairly is “Equality is about making sure people are treated fairly and given fair chances.” The Igbo culture treats people fairly by giving every man a chance to earn titles and the more titles you have, the more respect you get.
