Serfdom at the time was abolished everywhere except Russia. It was viewed as a vulgar act and below Western humanitarian standards. Russia ended serfdom to develop a more vigorous and mobile labor force. In 1861, serfs were officially emancipated in Russia. However, Russian emancipation was careful to preserve essential aristocratic power, the landowner nobility maintained their wealth and influence. The serfs obtained no new political rights at a national level. Compared to the abolition of slavery, the serfs were given more generous treatment.
