“Prostitution is one of the of worlds oldest professions” (Kipling 1) and still has quiet a relevance in today’s society. However, unlike this primitive profession, a not-so-old debate is whether or not the United States should legalize prostitution. Concerning America and its people, prostitution should not be legalized in any way. The emotional after effects of prostitution can stay with someone for life. Prostitution can ruin anything from a small relationship to a lifetime marriage. Similar to pornography, prostitution is a threat to commitment. …show more content…
Even in video games such as Grand Theft Auto 5 (which recently hit 1 billion in global retail sales and is rated the best game of all time by IGN) the game portrays prostitution as fun and cool. The video game player can spend virtual money on prostitutes, and even more disturbing, allows the option to kill them with ease. Studies have shown that theses diseases are extremely costly, and some even deadly. These diseases are spreading worldwide, “Each year more then 12 million people in the united states contract a sexually transmitted disease” (Hopkins 14). Sex workers have been accused of being the root cause of spreading many diseases, especially HIV. However, the inclination of HIV is particularly hard to determine, even if a prostitute is tested every week for HIV, she will test negative for at least 4 to 6 weeks, possibly even for the first year, after being infected. This means while the studies are still appearing, that particular prostitute alone can expose up to 630 different clients to HIV. This is assuming the prostitute is getting checked every week within a four-week window period, which is quit unlikely, and this is also assuming the prostitute quits working once the HIV has been found positive. The countless numbers of sex partners prostitutes have make it very hard to track down particular diseases, also the lack of information in the industry makes it nearly impossible to monitor, there is no documentation or mandatory checkups so finding or researching anything is a difficult
