Why The Witches was Censored

Roald Dahl has written at least 40 books that can be enjoyed by all age groups. At one point in his career he was known as one of the most well known children’s authors of all time. The Witches, a popular book by many was written by Roald Dahl and was published in 1983 around the time of his other book, The BFG, also one of his popular book. The Witches is a fantasy book that caught the attention of young readers around the world as they would enter a spooky land full of creatures only found in scary stories. Throughout this essay a summary of the book, why it was censored, and why I feel the book should no be censored will be found.

One reason that I fell it should not be censored is because the book is fantasy. Since the book is fantasy most of the characters are fake, which means that the witches in the story, that are perceived as women, are not even real. Another reason that I feel the book should not be censored is, it should be up to the parents of the child to decide if their child is mature enough to read the book. Just because some people don’t think that the book is a bad influence on kids, doesn’t mean that it will be influential to others. Also, the intention of the book is the entertain and not influence. When the book was censored because it seemed misogynistic and was a disgrace to women, but as stated by Dahl himself, the book was in no way, shape, or form, meant to view women as terrible creatures, but to give children a fun book to read.
